Why do most Spaniards believe that being homeowners is a reason for happiness?

If you are a regular reader of our blog, you probably remember our previous post in which we discussed the reasons why to become a homeowner.

But… Did you know that most Spaniards believe that owning their own property is a source of happiness? This statement is supported by the recent report “II Observatory on Housing and Sustainability”, prepared by the expert in sustainable housing finance, Unión de Créditos Inmobiliarios (UCI).

7 out of 10 Spaniards say they are happy to be homeowners

Catia Àlves – director of sustainability at UCI – explains:

• “Beyond mere ownership, the relationship between housing and happiness lies in the satisfaction and comfort it brings us. A safe, comfortable home, where we don’t get too hot in summer or too cold in winter, and suited to our needs, can generate a sense of belonging and stability that contributes significantly to our emotional and psychological well-being.”

• “Connection to the community and the availability of amenities and spaces for leisure and recreation in the residential environment also influence our perception of happiness and satisfaction with our housing.”

Figures vary from north to south

Looking at the different autonomous communities in Spain, there are notable differences in terms of the happiness of homeowners.

Where are the most satisfied homeowners?

• Murcia: 81,5%.
• Community of Madrid: 78.6%.
• Community of Valencia: 77.2%.
• Catalonia: 75.0%.

On the other hand, in some regions, satisfaction levels are considerably lower:

• Galicia: 65,8%.
• Asturias: 64,3%.
• Cantabria: 52,0%.

This indicates that the well-being related to being a homeowner may be strongly influenced by the regional context.

Factors that influence the happiness of spaniards homeowners

The location of the property, its size and layout, general condition and amenities are characteristics that impact the happiness of homeowners. However, one of the most crucial aspects is the level of efficiency and sustainability of the property.

In fact, more than 90% of respondents express a desire to make improvements to their home to increase their quality of life and level of personal happiness.
